Curtis Austring and the Bentley Generals
Red Deer, AB - Glover International Trucks congratulates one of their own for winning the 2016 Allan Cup in Steinbach Manitoba on April 16, 2016. The Allan Cup is the trophy awarded annually to the national senior amateur men’s ice hockey champions of Canada.
Curtis Austring started out his hockey career at the age of 5 in Stewart Valley Saskatchewan and went on to play with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies from 2004 – 08 as well as 4 years in the Western Hockey League mainly with the Regina Pats and Medicine Hat Tigers.
“Looking back at Curtis’s resume he was more than just a great hockey player” said Matt Januska C.F.O. and co-owner of Glover International. “He was as sharp with the books as he was with blades”. Curtis also won the Canadian Intervarsity Sport Dr. Randy Gregg Award in 2008 which is presented annually by Canadian Interuniversity Sport to reward excellence in the student-athlete. The Canadian University ice hockey player who receives this award has exhibited outstanding achievement in ice hockey, academics, and community involvement.
When asked what Curtis’s most memorable moments in hockey were he stated “well winning 3 Allan Cups and the Canada West Championship against our rivals the U of Alberta Golden Bears my third year which was pretty fantastic too”.
These days his wife Christine and daughters Abagail and Amelia are Curtis’s biggest fans along with the Glover organization. “Curtis has a great sense of what is going on when it comes to juggling family, hockey and his career. You can easily see and feel this when dealing with Curtis …… there is no panic, he has a plan, he’s extremely organized and looks after the people in his life like they were his family. Couldn’t ask for a better team member!” said Shane Bosch co-owner of Glover.
On top of it all Curtis won the Canada West UBC Alumni Trophy 2 years in a row for most sportsmanlike player of the year in 2007 and 2008.
When asked what he enjoyed most about playing Senior Men’s Hockey Curtis stated, “Being in competition with your teammates and going through the season-long journey towards winning a championship is great. Playing on the Bentley Generals hockey team is really awesome because we are all working men who come to the rink 3 nights a week because we just enjoy playing hockey. We really have become a family of players, coaches, trainers, sponsors and volunteers for the true love of the game and play for each other. There are all these clichés that exist but when you are in competition and you “go to war” and experience the ups and downs of wins, losses, injuries etc. and when you come out the other side victorious after all the hard work it is a pretty special feeling”.
“Curtis is one of those extremely unique individuals that is well rounded and looks at things from all angles”, said owner Brad Glover. “Our company has taken on many of his characteristics through his role as Human Resources Manager and we are very proud of Curtis and the Bentley Generals”.
